I must admit I've never really looked into this as all the sites don't seem to generate much traffic or am I missing something here??

Well ... is pretty much a team effort both for generating traffic and adding quality content.
As for traffic, you're right, not much traffic at the begining but very valuable.

I have been submitting each new blog post to about 11 now pretty consistently

the traffic isn't anything crazy, but 2 of them are sending me about 700 uniques a day each

the one cool thing about them is that you get one way links back to each single blog post, which seems to be helping pretty nicely for the se's

Yeah I started http://www.socialsmut.com/ after seeing how submitting my individual blog posts to social sites can increase indexing speed and traffic. Another feature I am taking advantage of at http://www.socialsmut.com is that each user gets an rss feed of all their submissions. I have a program set to ping these.

so submit away!

You can submit pictures, videos, freesites etc. This is really beneficial for sites you are trying to work with SEO wise.

You can submit whatever you want: blogs, free sites, pictures and video galleries...

Usually I'm submitting blog posts - it's a great way to have deep hardlinks
